Sunday August 1. The Tigers again took a two nothing lead, and once again their bullpen, as had happened often of late. could not preserve the win. A single run in the 5th and a leadoff homer in the 6th by McMullen (11) tied the game. A two run homer by late inning replacement Roger Repoz (11) in the 8th supplied the winning margin. Eddie Fisher again got the win, (6-6) getting the decision in all three contests. Tom Timmerman lost his first of the season (6-1). Angels 4 Tigers 2

Before the game the Tigers announced the demotion of Cesar Guiterrez and Bill Gilbreth to Toledo. The Tigers needed to make room for recently acquired Ron Perranoski. The Tigers also brought up Jack Whillock who had been 5-2 at the Tigers' AA Montogmery affiliate

with a 1.19 earned average and 15 saves in 37 games. Whillock had only given up 25 hits in 57 innings. It is hoped that this right/left combination can take some of the burden off Fred Schermann and TomTimmerman who have struggled of late. This will be Whillock's first trip to the bigs although he has pitched in the minors since 64, first with St. Louis and, since 68, with the Tigers. He is 28 years old, 6'3" and a native of Clinton, Arkansas. --submitted by Tom Davis--

Bosox and Brew Crew split 4 game series

GAME 1 - County Stadium - MIL 2, BOS 1
Jim Lonborg was brilliant until the 9th inning when Theobald singled and Johnny Briggs hit his 19th homer of the year to win the game in walk off style. Brewer starter Skip Lockwood went 7 innings and gave up only 1 run, but left on the short side of the ledger. Reliever Ken Sanders (6-0, 1.20) came on and was flawless for the final 2 innings and got the win.

GAME 2 - BOS 14, MIL 3
Bill Parsons was cruising for 7 innings as Milwaukee had a tight 3-2 lead over the Bosox, then lightning struck to the tune of 8 runs in the 8th and 4 runs in the 4th for the Bosox. That put the game completely out of reach. Ray Culp (11-8, 3.55) went the distance. Both Reggie Smith and John Kennedy had 3 hits apiece. Joe Lahoud had 3 RBI's and his 9th homer of the season.

GAME 3 - MIL 6, BOS 4
Boston thought they had this one in the bag when they jumped all over Brewer starter Jim Slaton for 4 runs in the 3rd. Little did they know that they would give 3 of them back in the bottom half off the inning as their starter, Gary Peters was simply dreadful. The Brew crew scored 2 runs in the 6th to take the lead at 5-4. This would be a lead that they would never relinquish. 8th place hitter Bobby Heise doubled home Ted Kubiak, who led off the 6th with a walk. Ellie Rodriguez, who reached on a clean single, scored when Slaton hit a sac fly to left.

GAME 4 - BOS 8, MIL 1
El Tiante' was crusing until the 8th when he rean out of gas and lost his shutout. Bill "the Spaceman" Lee cam on for the final inning and two thirds to close it out. Boston busted it open with 5 runs in the final 2 innings vs Milwaukee's porus bullpen. John Morris surrendered 5 runs for the Brew crew and only got 4 outs. Marty Pattin had a decent outing yielding 3 runs in 7 innings of work. The "Boomer" George Scott hit one of his patented "taters" to go along with his other 2 hits. Scott had 3 RBI's on the day. Yaz even belted a bases loaded single as he has begun to show some sort of life lately. Luis Tiant (5-2, 5.04) even had an RBI double to help out his own cause.

Buckos take 2 of 3 from Dodgers

Game 1: Pirates 0-5-0, Dodgers 2-8-0
Pitchers duel. Hard luck Al Downing (10-9, 3.14) shuts out Pirates for his 10th win on the season. Game was scoreless until the 7th. Downing scattered 5 hits in the CG win. Buckner and Dick Allen had 2 hits each to lead LA. Wind was gusting at 15 mph out in right field, but neither team could take advantage of it.

Game 2: Pirates 6-7-1, Dodgers 4-7-1
Pirates bats heat up Bob Robertson slammed his 25th and Willie Stargell added two dingers to give him 31 for the season. Walker earned his 10th win and Dave Giusti picked up his 20th save. Davis led the Dodgers with a 3-4 performance at the plate. Game was knotted at 1 apiece when Stargell hit his first homer, a 3 run shot off of Bill Singer.

Game 3: Pirates 3-8-0, Dodgers 0-7-0
Steve Blass
(10-8, 3.35) pitched a CG gem 9 IP 7 hits 0 ER 1 BB 7 K's. Bob Robertson slammed his 26th HR matching his real life total for the Bucs. Willie Davis had 3 of the Dodgers hits going 3-4 again for the 2nd straight game and 7 for 12 for the series. Claude Osteen went the distance for LA, but again suffered without any run support. --submitted by Mike Kenney--

1971 Cubs at Expos

Monday July 26. Milt Pappas and Steve Renko were engaged in a pitching duel through the first four innings. Only John Bateman's rbi groundout in the bottom of the fourth put a run on the board. But the bottom of the fourth also saw a one hour rain delay which sapped both pitchers. Pappas left for a pinch hitter in the fifth, and perhaps Renko should not have come out in he fifth as he gave up two runs. Juan Pizarro (1-2) made a rare relief appearance occasioned by the rain and held the Expos in check until the 8th when Ron Hunt doubled home the tying run. A two out single by Glenn Beckert followed by back to back doubles by Billy Williams and Jim Hickman gave the Cubs a two run lead. Phil "The Vulture" Regan retired the Expos 1-2-3 to earn his fith save. Howie Reed (4-5) took the loss. Incongruously, Pizarro was charged with a blown save although Pappas could not have been the winning pitcher as he only went four innings. Cubs 4 Expos 2

Tuesday July 27. Bob Bailey and Bateman both drove home runs in the first to put the Expos in front. The Cubs came back with one in the second. Hunt drove home Bobby Wine in the fourth to push the margin back to 2. In the 8th, Williams doubled home a run and Ron Santo singled him home to tie the game. Howie Reed came in and closed out the inning with runners on first and third. In the ninth, Reed gave up a leadoff triple to Johnny Callison and then walked J.C. Martin. As Joe Pepitone, who pinchhitting the previous inning walked and scored a run and then stayed in to play first base, approached the batter's box, Reed was still complaining to the home umpire. Reed apparently used a no-no word and was booted from the game. Mike Marshall came in and promptly served up a three run homer to Pepitone (10). Phil Regan (5-5) got the win. Reed (5-6) again took the loss. Cubs 6 Expos 3

Wednesday July 28. Fergie Jenkins, pitching in his native land, simply did not have it in the early innings. The Expos battered him for 6 run and 11 hits in four innings while the Cubs managed two runs of their own. In the fifth, though Jim Hickman (17) hit a three run homer to bring the Cubs within one. That seemed to light a fire under Jenkins as he did not allow another Expo runner. Although the Cubs would put at least one runner on in each of the last three innings, they could not force a run across the plate. Jenkins fell to 15-7. Carl Morton got the win for the Expos Claude Raymond picked up his 5th save. Expos 6 Cubs 5

1971 Oakland at Detroit

This series was played head to head betwen Bill Keller and Tom Davis

Friday July 21. Mickey Lolich took the mound looking for his 21st win; opposing him would be Catfish Hunter. The Tiges opened the scoring wth a two run double in the first by Jim Northrup. That was really all Lolich would need, though Norm Cash (30), Bill Freehan (18) and Northrup (16) all deposited shots into the stands. Sal Bando's homer (15) in the 8th was the only Oakland tally. Lolich went to 21-6 an Hunter fell to 9-10. Tigers 9 Athletics 1

Saturday July 22. Dick Green's (6) two run homer in the second and Bando's (16) three run homer in the third gave Blue Moon Odom (3-4) a comfortable cushion. But Aurelio Rodriuez (11) and Northrup (17) each hit two run homers to bing the Tigers within one run. Campy Campaneris singled home Green in the 8th to extend the lead. A Freehan (19) homer in the ninth caused Rollie Fngers (5 saves) a little anxiety but he cloed the game in fine fashion. Les Cain (2-3) took the loss despite striking out 11 in 6.2 innings. Athletics 6 Tigers 5

Sunday Juy 23 (first game) The Tigers hit three homers in the third; Gates Brown (3), just off the disabled list struck first and he was followed by back to back homers by Northrup (18) and Freehan (20), each hitting their third homer of the series. The A's never figured out Joe Coleman (13-3) who only allowed one walk and two hits. Chuck Dobson (7-7) took the loss. Tigers 8 A's 1

Sunday July 23 (second game) Vida Blue (15-5) matched Coleman's effort of the first game, blanking the Tigers on two hts and one walk. Mike Epstein (13) hit a three run homer in the first and although the A's continued to score, the game was esentially over. The Tigers didnt have a runner until the fourth innig and didnt have a hit until the 6th. Tiger starter Bill Denehy (1-4) only lasted three innings A's 6 Tigers 0 --submitted by Tom "Crash" Davis--

Mitter-gating circumstances

Neither starter (Jim Perry or Gary Peters) had much in this contest. The bats were alive. Even George Mitterwald slammed 2 homers, but alas they were not enough as the Bosox outlasted the Twinkies in htis 7-6 affair. Yaz had 2 hits and a homer to move above the Mendoza line once again in this forgettable season for him. Killebrew, who looks to be in his twilight also had a long blast. Tatum came on to relieve Peteres for the final 2 outs as Boston moves 6 games over .500 for the first time all season.

Culp-Fiction

[Metropolitan Stadium - Boston 4, Minnesota 0]
With bases loaded and 2 out in the 2nd John Kennedy delivered a clean single to center to score 2 runs and put Boston up 2-0. Similar scenario in the 5th occurred when Twin starter Steve Luebber got wild again and walked George Scott to force in a run. He managed to strike out Joe Lahoud and fan Bob Montgomery to limit the damage to 1 run and put the score at 3-0. Minny had second and third in the home half of the 5th but failed to score when Ray Culp tightened things up and got out of the jam. With 1 out in the 6th Luebber allowed Kennedy to reach first with a walk and Aparicio followed that with a clean single. Before Reggie Smith could stroll to the plate Hal Haydel was brought in to replace Luebber. Smith, popped to second, but Yaz walked to load the bases for the 3rd time today, but Petrocelli fanned and no runs scored. With runners on 1st and 3rd and 2 outs in the 8th Yaz flew out to center to continue his A-rod imitation. Petro reached first off of reliever Ron Perranoski to open the 9th when 3rd sacker George Thomas booted a routine grounder. Scott singled to make put runners on 1st and 2nd. Lahoud struck out on a 3-2 slider for the first out of the inning. Montgomery hit into a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners with 2 out and pitcher Ray Culp scheduled to bat. Since he was tossing a shutout there was no way that Culp was going to be removed from the game. Perranoski put one right over the heart of the plate and Culp singled home a run to help his own cause. The inning ended when Kennedey k'd on a 2-2 cutter. The Twins went 3 up and 3 down in the 9th and Culp had himself a 5 hit shutout.

A.I. to the rescue...HOU takes 2 of 3 from Amazin's

The Astros came into Shea on the heels of their embattled manager, Bill Keller, being fired. Their new manager, simply known by his initials (A.I.) took over and took 2 of 3 from the Mets.

With the score tied at 3 Ron Taylor came on in the 9th for the Mets and proceeded to surrender 3 runs and the game. Cesar Cedeno singled home Joe Morgan, then Doug Rader doubled home Jimmy Wynn and Cedeno. The Mets went weakly in the 9th and Taylor took the loss. Astros 6, Mets 3.

Game 2: The Astros now have a mini-streak with their second win in a row. A 4 run outburst in the top of the third off of Mets rookie hurler Jon Matlack (0-2, 3.60) was all Houston needed. Morgan, Cedeno, Rader and Menke each knocked in a run during Houston's big inning. Fred Gladding pitched the 8th and 9th innings to notch his 9th save. Astros 4, Mets 2.

Game 3: Not only were the home town fans treated to 14 innings of baseball, but they were also forced to suffer through 2 long rain delays (46 and 63 minutes). By the time the dust cleared and the Mets scratched out a win there were just a handful of fans left to see it. Reliever Danny Frisella (5-1, 0.67), who has been lights out for the Mets this season got the win after tossing 3 scoreless innings in relief. The Mets winning run occurred when Cleon Jones led off the 14th with a single and stole second, then continued on to third when backup catcher Norm Miller airmailed his throw into center. Steady Eddie Kranepool lifted a medium fly ball to Jesus Alou in left. Jones tagged and score easily as the Mets were able to salvage 1 win in this 3 game set. Mets 3, Astros 2 (14 inn).

Astros fire Keller as manager...Reds hire him immediately !

The Houston baseball club regretfully announced today that manager Bill Keller will formally be released of his duties and manager. Keller and his club did not see eye to eye and both parties mutually agreed to his dismissal from the club.

In a related story the Cincinnati Reds announced the hiring of Keller, who they believe will help lead them to the NL West title, which has turned out to be the weakest of the 4 divisions.

Dodgers take 2 of 3 from Redlegs

[GAME 1 - Riverfront Stadium - LA 12, CIN 1]
Don Gullett (12-6, 2.55) and Don Sutton (11-4, 2.87) were dueling until the 8th inning when Gullett tired and was replaced by Gibbon and Merritt, both of whom surrendered a combined 8 runs in the 8th to let the game get out of hand. This time rookie Doyle Alexander (2-4, 3.86) was the beneficiary of a blow out win. Every Dodger batter, including Alexander, had a hit except for Willie Crawford who is mired in a deep slump. Allen had 3 RBI's in this contest and rookie Bill Russell had 3 hits in 4 AB's.

[GAME 3 - Riverfront Stadium - CIN 2, LA 1]
This one started out as a pitcher's duel and ended up exactly the same way. Al Downing (9-9, 3.32) has been pitching well as of late still hasn't gotten any run support. His opposite number, Jim McGlothlin (9-4, 1.95) is used to receiving little of no support and almost went the distance before giving way to Clay Carroll (S-9) for the final out in the 9th. Cincy scored both of their runs in the 2nd, when George Foster doubled home Tony Perez with 2 outs and
Woody Woodward followed with an RBI single of his own. LA's lone run came in the 8th when Wills singled Russell home. LA threatened in the 9th when McGlothlin began running out of octane. Wes Parker singled to make it first ans third and pinch hitter Joe Ferguson walked to load the up with 2 outs.
