1971 Cubs at Cardinals

Friday, September 3. The drama usally supplied in a Bill Hands start was missing today as the Cards struck for two runs in the first, including Joe Torre's 17th homer.  Buts the Cubs scored five times after two were gone in the third, capitalizing on two Cardinal outfield errors.  Ted Sizemore (1) led off the third with a homer and the Cards pushed another across on a Ted Simmons groundout.  The Cards took the lead wit two in the fifth only to see the Cubs tie it at 6 in he 6th.  Glenn Beckert's two out single in the 8th produced the wining run.  Phil Regan got the win (7-8, 5.40)  Ray Newman got his first major league save.  Reggie Cleveland (9-15, 4.47) was the loser.    Cubs 7   Cardinals 6

Saturday, September 4.  Milt Pappas (12-13, 3.34) continued his string of good outings.  He has now pitched at least 7 innings in 8 of his last nine starts. The Cubs hit Cardinal starter Steve Carlton (13-18, 4.13) hard in the first, scoring 5 times.  Billy Williams (26) hit a solo shot in the seond while Joe Hague (12) had a two run homer for the hometown Cards.  Cubs 6 Cardinals 3

Sunday, September 5.  Jim Hickman singled home a run in the first, hit a three run homer (20) in the third and a solo shot (21) in the 7th on his way to a five rbi day. Jerry Reuss (9-17, 5.25) was the victim of those five and two others as Ferguson Jenkins (23-8, 2.35) won despite not having his best stuff.  Cubs 7 Cardinals 4

A's sweep twin bill vs Sens

8/29/71 - Oakland Coliseum - OAK 5, WAS 1 (Game 1)
When your back is up against the wall and you need to halt a skid it never hurts to call on your Cy Young candidate, one Mr. Vida Blue (20-8, 1.71). Blue was purely outstanding as he went the distance and yielded only 2 hits. Unfortunately for him one of those hits was a solo shot by Frank Howard in the 4th, otherwise Mr. Blue would have had himself a shutout. Not so surprising was the return of Oakland's offense coincided with the return of Reggie Jackson to the starting lineup. Jackson was 2 for 4 in his return and the rest of the A's fed off of his presence. Mike Epstein had 2 RBI's and Sal Bando was 3 for 3.

8/29/71 - Oakland Coliseum - OAK 4, WAS 1 (Game 2)
Denny Mclain (7-13, 3.74) and Catfish Hunter (13-12, 3.45) dueled for 7 innings in the nightcap until Gene Tenace hit a 2 run shot in the 8th to make it 4-1 and virtually put the game out of reach. Tenace also homered in the 6th to break a 1-1 stalemate. Hunter scattered 6 hits over 9 innings in a complete game effort to raise his record 1 game over .500. Washington's lone run came in the 4th when Dick Billings singled home rookie Jeff Burroughs who had doubled with one out. That gave Washington a 1-0 lead that they would nurse until the bottom of the 5th, when Hunter would knock in Monday with a sac fly to left. That run was unearned. After the game McLain was visibly upset when he met the media. At 7-13, McLain has seen his comeback season slip away from him as he has begun to fall further and further into the depths of mediocrity.
--series was played h2h online by Bill Keller (A's) and Marc Weiss (Senators)--

Nats blank A's again

8/28/71 - Oakland Coliseum - WAS 9, OAK 0
In the heat of this great AL West pennant race the A's needed Chuck Dobson (8-10, 3.74) to step up and deliver. Dobson delivered a stinker in his 7 innings of less than mediocre work. Mike Thompson (1-4, 4.38) was stellar for the Nats who now took the first 2 games of the series from the A's in their quest to play spoiler. The A's dropped out of first place as the Chisox broke their recent skid. Senator center fielder Del Unser was 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. Frank Howard, who is usually Washington's only offensive contributor was 1 for 2 with 2 walks and 3 RBI's. Oakland played it's second consecutive game without the ailing Jackson.

Going to a Go-Go

8/27/71 - Oakland Coliseum - WAS 3, OAK 0
Bill Gogolewski (3-7, 2.78) tossed an immaculate 3 hitter as he went the distance and shutout the Reggie Jackson-less A's 3-0. The Nats posted two in the first when Frank "Hondo" Howard hit a mammoth shot to deep left to score Del Unser and himself and put Washington up 2-0. That would be all the runs that Gogo would need. Blue Moon Odom went 7 innings for the Athletics and gave up only 2. Washington's 3rd run was charged to Rollie Fingers who surrendered a 9th inning homer to Bernie Allen to finish the scoring.

Jints sweep Phils for 7th win in a row

Highlight of the disk is John Cumberland, who spun a two-hit shutout in a 5-0 Giants win in Game 2 of the Saturday double header. The Giants take all three games to stretch their winning streak to seven games and give them a 9-1 record in the last ten games. I doubt it'll be enough to secure a tie for first, but they're getting closer.

1971 Twins at Tigers

Monday, August 23.  The Tigers scored three times in the bottom of the first on a Jim Northrup rbi single and a two run triple by Bill Freehan.  Then the Tigers gifted those two of those runs back to the Twins on a Norm Cash error and a Freehan passed ball.  Cesar Tovar also doubled home a run to tie the game at three. In the bottom of the third, a Freehan sacrifice fly gave the Tigers the lead.  After Northrup hit a three run homer (21) in the bottom of the sixth the Tigers added two more to break the game open.  Les Cain went five innings for the win (4-4, 3.10)  Bill Denehy worked four innings for the save (3, 5.23)  Steve Luebber took the loss (1-4, 3.78  Tigers 10 Twins 4

Tuesday, August 24.  Dick McAuliffe opened the bottom of the first with a homer (18).  Graig Nettles responded in the top of the second th his own lead off homer (6),  The Tigers responded with two in the second on an rbi triple by McAuliffe and a base hit by Gates Brown.  A sacrifice fly in the 4th by George Mitterwald brought the Twinkies to within one.  The Tiges again responded with 3 in the fifth including a two run homer by Aurelio Rodriguea (13), his first since July 30th.  Joe Niekro went six for he win (7-4, 3.80)  Timmermann got the save (8, 2.62)  Jim Perry took the loss (12-14, 4.73)  Tigers 6  Twins 2

Wednesday  August 25.  As Janice from "Friends" would say O-MI-GOD.  For seven innings, Jim Kaat (14-10, 3.21) held the Tigers to one hit.  Unfortunately, that one hit was a third inning leadoff homer by Mickey Stanley (6.  Kaat was doubly unfortunate in that his opposing pitcher on this date was Mickey Lolich.  While Lolich was wild today (5 hits,  6 walks, 8 ks), not a single batter who walked advanced beyond first base.  In fact, the Twins put a runner on second three times; in each of the first three innnings but were unable to move a runner further along.  Lolich (27-7, 1.86) again throws a complete game shutout and his consecutive scoreless inning streak in now at 47.  After the game, Lolich was showing some strain.  "I'm sorry, but I really dont want to talk about anything right now.  Put your questions in writing and I will answer them but you wont get the answers until."  Lolich then paused and continued, "Later.  I feel if say anything at all, I'll jinx myself."  Then, for the first time since the entering the locker room, The Fat Man smiled, "Of course, maybe not saying anything is a jinx, too.  The hell with it, what are your qusetions, and Yes it feels damn good."  Tigers 2  Twins 0

Sens take 2 of 3 from Halos

8/24 - 8/26 - Anaheim Stadium - Anaheim, CA
GAME 1 - WAS 8, CAL 2

Young Pete Broberg (4-6, 4.60) looks to be rounding into form for the Nats as he went 8 innings and gave up only 2 en route to the victory. Denny Riddleberger came on board for the final frame. The normally light hitting backstop, Paul Casanova had 2 key hits. Jeff Burroughs (2) and Frank Howard (21) clouted homers off of Angel starter Clyde Wright (12-9, 2.94), who did not have one of his better outings. Mickey Rivers had 3 hits in a losing effort.

GAME 2 - CAL 11, WAS 4
Denny McLain's outing only lasted 1/3 of an inning as the Angels batted around and scored 6 runs. Roger Repoz slammed a 3 run shot the ended McLain's day right where it started...in the first inning. Washington's pen was just as awful as the Halos cruised to an easy 11-4 victory

GAME 3 - WAS 6, CAL 4
Dick Bosman (6-18, 4.66) was cruising until the Angels exploded for 4 runs in the 7th and seemingly left the Nats for dead. Typically bad teams like this Senator outfit usually find ways to lose these types of games, and in this contest they were well on the way to doing so until the top of the 9th. Down 4-2 Paul Casanova led off with a single and advanced to third on Toby Harrah's single. Pinch hitter Larry Biittner lifted a sac fly to Mickey Rivers in center to make it 4-3 Halos. Del Unser singled of of a tiring Tom Murphy as did Dave Nelson, who knocked in the tying run. A call to the bullpen brought on Dave LaRoche to give the Halos the coveted lefty/lefty matchup vs Don Mincher, who grounded out weakly to Ken McMullen at 3rd for the second out of the inning. The Capital Punisher, Frank Howard punished LaRoche with a 2 out frozen rope single to left to score both Unser and Nelson and give the Sens a 2 run lead. Paul Lindblad came on to notch the save by tossing an uneventful 9th. Washington actually won a series.

White Sox in a Tailspin

The Chicago White Sox were swept for the 2nd time in a row.... this time
by the Baltimore Orioles to extend their losing streak to 6 in a row.

Gm 1- Baltimore 6 Chicago 3
Loser Tom Bradley (10-13 3.21) pitched OK for 6 innings but Mike Cuellar
(17-8 2.84) proved to much for the suddenly anemic Sox attack.

Gm 2 - Baltimore 5 Chicago 0
Sox ace Wilber Wood (18-10 2.39) gets rocked for12 hits and 5 runs in 6
innings. Winner Pat Dobson (14-7 2.90) throws a one hit shutout gem for
the Orioles. He walked only 2 and stuck out 3.

Gm 3 - Baltimore 13 Chicago 4
With a tired bull pen, Joel Horlen (5-11 5.93) takes one for the team
going 2 innings and giving up 13 runs. A truly pathetic effort and he
has just about worked his way out of the rotation at this point! Jim
Palmer (18-8 2.49) goes the distance for the win.

LA rallies to take rubber match 7-5

8/25 - Montreal, Quebec - Parc Jary
GAME 3 - LA 7, MON 5

Both starters, Doyle Alexander (5-5, 4.50) and Steve Renko struggled, as both offenses did not. With the score tied at 5 the Dodgers scored 2 runs in the top of the 9th off of Expo reliever Claude Raymond (2-2, 5.44). With 1 out Bill Buckner singled to right and Willie Davis worked out a walk on 5 pitches. Richie Allen singled home Buckner to make it 6-5. Willie Crawford grounded weakly to Ron Fairly at 1st, but it was enough to plate Davis to give LA a 2 run lead. This time Jim Brewer did not disappoint as he set the Expos down in order in the 9th to notch his 20th save of the season as the Dodgers took 2 out of 3 in the series north of the border.

LA blows out Montreal 8-2

8/24 - Montreal, Quebec - Parc Jary
GAME 2 - LA 8, MON 2
Al Downing (13-9, 2.81), continued his hot streak with this complete game gem. Downing's only hiccup was the 2 run second inning that he allowed the Expos. Bill Stoneman (10-14, 3.12) was matching Downing pitch for pitch until the 6th when he yielded 4 runs and the game. Richie Allen hit his 17th homer of the season and both Willie Crawford and Maury Wills had 3 hits. Woods knocked in all both of Montreal's' runs.

A fine Wine...

8/23 - Montreal, Quebec - Parc Jary
GAME 1 - MON 9, LA 8 - 11 innings
Don Sutton, did not have it today, but for some reason LA's manager tried to let him find himself. In the process the Expos nickled and dimed him for 7 runs in 6 innings. Still the Dodgers were able to rally back with a 5 run 7th inning of of Expo starter John Strohmayer to force extra innings. LA took the lead in the top of the 11th when Expo closer Claude Raymond yielded a RBI single to Richie Allen. The Dodgers sent Jim Brewer, their closer, to the hill in the bottom of the frame to close it out vs 3 straight lefties in the Expo lineup. The matchup seemingly favored LA, but "Le Grande Orange" Rusty Staub led off with a walk. Ron Fairly fanned for the first out and pinch hitter Woods grounded out for the second out. Brewer looked to have it under control at this point, but Bob Bailey singled in the tying run. John Bateman was given an intentional pass to force Montreal into a tough decision. Montreal had to choose between allowing Raymond to hit with 2 outs or going with a pinch hitter. The choice was obvious...go with the pinch hitter. The selection of light hitting Bobby Wine was not so obvious. Wine has made a career out of flashing the leather, but the lumber has always been a bunch of splinters for him. Brewer challenged Wine who fought off a jam job to bloop one into right center to score Bailey and win the game. Brewer (7-5, 3.69) was credited with his 4th blown save of the season.

It's Official: Bucs are Mickey Mouse organization

[PITTSBURGH, PA - ESPN]
It's official ! ESPN reports that Mike Kenney has officially stepped down from the 1st place Pirates. Kenney sited connectivity issues. Speculation is that he just quite couldn't connect with his players or management even though his team was running through the National League. Pittsburgh sits 8 1/2 games atop the NL East over the NY Mets with an 82-42 record. Kenney piloted the squad to 40 games over .500, but there were some deep seeded organization and personality issues going on behind the scene.

In a related move Pirate ownership announced that Andy Weinrib will be taking over the managerial duties immediately. Weinrib appeared before the cameras in his introductory press conference tonight, while vacationing at Disney. Weinbrib was quoted as saying, "just because I'm standing next to Mickey Mouse, doesn't mean that one should infer that the Pirate organization is anything of the sort". After Weinrib's brief statement to the press he was asked a few questions. Here are some of his responses:

ESPN: Why do you think Kenney quit ?
AW: Winning disguises all turmoil...I believe he and the organization were unhappy for a long time and they all reached their breaking point.

ESPN: How will things be different in your clubhouse ?
AW: What happens between the white lines is all that matters. We'll have an open door policy here and the lines of communication will always be open between my players and myself as well as our great owners.

ESPN: What about the reported differences in the locker room ?
AW: You're hear to win, not like each other. We'll look at making trades in the off season. Right now we're going to focus on having the best record in baseball and kicking a-s and taking no prisoners.

ESPN: Do you believe any team in the NL can catch you guys now that you are at the helm ?
AW: Come on guys, give me a tough one. This team was in the process of running away with it all while they were right in the middle of a storm. Now that things are going to calm down can you imagine just how good they will be ?

ESPN: How do you feel about having the opportunity to manage All-Stars like Clemente and Stargell
AW: I feel it's an honor and a privilege...it's a once in a lifetime opportunity for me, but I'm the boss and they will know that.

ESPN: Rumor has it that Stargell was a disruptive force in the clubhouse. His benching by Kenney against lefties has soured him. How do you plan on handling it ?
AW: we are 4- games over 500...he cant be that much of a disruptive force...just because the media says it i know my players...He's a great person and a future HOF'er in my book.

ESPN: Many say that you are in a weak division and that anyone can manage the collection of stars that the Pirates have
AW:
it's very easy for people to say that..but my players would tell you differently.. We are like the song says"we are family".. As far as a weak division this is the major leagues there are no weak divisions

ESPN: What will your relationship be with ownership ? Will they be meddling in the day to day affairs of the team like they did during Kenney's regime ? or have you been given the complete control of the day to day opps ?
AW: when i took this job the condition was that management would have hands off the team..We shook hands and i believe they will live up to there promise.

The press conference ended immediately after that final question.

The Pitts...

Rumors have been swirling out off the Steel town that manager Mike Kenney of the league leading Pirates has had a difference of opinion with management. Tim Kurkjan of ESPN is reporting that there were communication problems going on in the organization despite the team's fantastic performance on the field. Peter Gammons is also reporting that the league has tried to step in and mediate this situation, which mirrors the late 1970's Bronx Zoo atmosphere in the NY Yankee clubhouse. An update is pending sometime around 8 or 9pm EDT tonight.

1971 Brewers at Tigers

Friday August 20.  Bill Freehan doubled home two runs in the first and hit a sacrifice fly in the tid to take the team rbi lead oe from the slumping Norm Cash (1 homer in August)  Dave May (13) hit a solo homer in the 6th t bring the Brewers within one but it could have bee more had not Jose Cardenal been thrown out by Freehan trying to steal.  Al Kaline hit a two run homer (17) in the 8th and Tommy Harper had a solo shot in 9th (13).  Bill Parsons was saddled with the loss (15-28 4.38)  Joe Niekro (6-4, 3.86) got the win. Tom Timmermann, the save (7).  Tiges 6 Brewers 3

Saturday August 21.  A capacity crowd filled Tiger Stadium to see if Mickey Lolich could continue his sccoreless streak.  And the Fat Man obliged, throwing his fourth straight shutout and extending his scoreless inning streak to 38.  "I'll enjoy it while it lasts.  I am not that good": said the ever humble donut shop propreitor from Sterling Heights, "But I am lucky.  They just seem to be hitting it where my fielders are playing."  "When they can hit it at all," quipped Norm Cash from his nearby locker.  Lolich again only walked one while striking out10 for his major league leading 284th strikeout. The Tigers only runs came in the 4th when Kaline led off with a single and Cash walked.  Gates Brown hit a tailor made double play ball to Brewer shortstop Bob Heise who kicked it to load the bases.  Singles by Aurelio Rodriguez and Eddie Brinkman and a sacrifice fly by Lolich was all the offense the Tigers had.  But the fans didnt come to see offense on this day, they came to see zeroes put up on the board.  Skip Lockwood (7-12, 2.60) took the loss.  Lolich continues to cruise (26-7, 1.91)  Tigers 3 Brewers 0

Sunday  August 22.  The Brewers werent having any more of shutout baseball as Johnny Briggs doubled home Ron Theobold in the first.  But Dick McAuliffe tied the game with a leadoff homer (16), then Freehan doubled home three more. The Brewers got two back in the second.  However Jim Northrup hit a three run homer (20) in the fourth and McAuliffe added a two run shot in the 6th (17).  Marty Pattin (11-14, 3.70 took the loss.  The win went to Joe Coleman (18-4, 2.86).  Tigers 9  Brewers 4

Friday August 20, (second game)  Ken Holtzman came off the diabled list to provide some much needed assistance to the Cubs starting rotation behind Jenkins.  Maybe he needed more time.  He gave up six runs on nine hits in just three innnings of work, (9-12, 5.42)  Jesus Also and Jack Hiatt both had three hits while big first baseman Bob Watson went 4-4 with 2 rbis.  Ken forsch (4-8, 3.59) was the winner. Astros 8 Cubs 2

Saturday August 21 .  Bill Hands (11-15, 4.82) scattering 10 hits and giving up 3 runs in 7 innings.  But the Cub bullpen couldnt hold the Stros close as Bob Watson hit a three run homer in the 9th (5).  Billy Williams homered for the Cubs (24).  Jack Billingham had a great outing, pitching into he 9th (11-11, 3.02) to even his record.  Astros 6 Cubs 2

Sunday August 22.  Milt Pappas had gone the distance in his last outing only to be out pitched by Phil Niekro.  The Astros do not have a Niekro on their staff and this time Pappas' full game outing went into he win column (10-12, 3.29)  Wade Blasingame was hit hard and often in less than 5 innings of work (8-10 4.14).  Ron Santo hit a two run homer (12) and Johnny Callison added a solo shot late in the game (6)  Cubs 9 Astros 2         .

Nats and A's split 2 in our Nation's Capital

8/17 - 8/18 - RFK Stadium - Washington, D.C.
GAME 1 - OAK 5, WAS 4:
Those Swingin' A's jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Reginald Martinez Jackson hit a 2 run homer off of Bill Goglewski (2-7, 3.03). Blue Moon Odom gave two runs back in the 4th when Gogolewski helped his own cause with a 2 out opposite field single that scored Frank Howard and Jeff Burroughs. Both teams exchanged runs in the 7th, but the A's scored a run in both the 8th and 9th to win it. Sal Bando hit a solo shot in the 8th and Mike Epstein had a sac fly in the 9th to score Campy Campaneris. Don Mincher's 1 out homer in the 9th made it 5-4, but Frank Howard popped to Bando at 3rd and Burroughs K'd for the final out. Jim "Mudcat" Grant pitched the final 3 innings and gave up 1 run and earned his first win since arriving from Pittsburgh in a waiver trade.

GAME 2 - WAS 3, OAK 2:
The Nats drew first blood when Del Unser led off the home half of the first with a double to right. Dave Nelson bunted Unser over to 3rd and Don Mincher scored him with a sac fly to right. Pete Broberg was blanking the A's until the top of the 5th, when Dick Green led off with a double and pitcher Chuck Dobson bunted him over to 3rd. Broberg balked and Green was able to score while Campaneris was batting. Campy eventually singled and moved to second after Joe Rudi walked. Tommy Davis singled to center to score Camp and the A's and Chuck Dobson had a 2-1 lead. The Sens would tie it up in the 6th when Dave Nelson single with two outs to put runners on the corners. Del Unser, who was on third reached base on a throwing error by Campaneris at short. Don Mincher plated Unser with a sac fly to George Hendrick that just fell short of the warning track in deep center. With the game knotted at 2 the Sens would take the lead for good in the 8th when Tim Cullen walked. He moved up to second on a wild pitch by reliever Jim Roland, who then compounded his gaffe with another...an inadvertent balk. Del Unser lifted a medium range
fly to Joe Rudi in right to score Cullen. Pete Broberg was able to get Larry Brown and Dick Green to pop out weakly for the first 2 outs in Oakland's final at bat. When Reggie Jackson was brought on board to pinch hit for Roland Joe Grzenda was summoned from the pen to give Washington the coveted lefty/lefty match up. Jackson was jammed on a pitch he probably shouldn't have offered out and Mincher picked up the slow roller to first to get Jackson unassisted to end the game and salvage a split for the series.

1971 Tigers at White Sox

Tuesday, August 17 (1st game)  WHO IS TIHS GUY?  Mickey Lolich came into this season with a career record of 102-82.  Last year, in the 1970 season, he led the American League with 19 losses.  He has never won more than 19 in a season.  Twice he has won 8 more than games than he has lost.  Today he threw his third consecutive shutout.  He has now given up one run and two walks in his last 36 innings, and has thrown 29 consecutive scoreless innings.  Backed by Bill Freehan's 3 run homer in the 6th (26), Lolich (25-7, 1.97) held the ChiSox to 2 hits and stuck out 9.  Tommy John took the loss.  (14-9, 2.67)  Tigers 4 White Sox 0

Tuesday August 17 (second game)  A Tiger lefty worked so well in the first game, the Tigers sent another to the mound in the second game.  Les Cain is no Mickey Lolich, but he didnt need to be.  Cain (3-4, 3.25) gave up two runs in the 6.2 innings he pitched, but his teammates gave him ample support.  Dick McAuliffe doubled home a run in the third.  After Mike Andrews tied the game in the fourth with his 6th homer, the Tigers erupted for seven runs over the next two innings. Joe Horlen took the loss (5-10, 4.99)  Tigers 9 White Sox 3

Wednesday August 18.  Two 17 game winners took the mound, Joe Coleman facing Wilbur Wood.  They did not disappoint as the White Sox faithful were on the edge of their seats.  After nine inings, neither team had been able to push across a run.  Wood had worked out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the 7th with a double play grounder.  In the 8th Tony Taylor was throw out at the plate by Walt Williams trying to score on a Wille Horton fly ball.  Coleman did not face any real trouble through the first nine innings.  After retiring the previous 14 in a row, he gave up a 10th inning leadoff single to Rich McKinney.  Coleman got the next two, but walked thr weak hitting (.197) Rich Morales.  Left handed Bob Spence (4-20 this season) batted for Wood.  He bounced a ground ball through the infield and McKinney, running from second on contact scored ahead of Mickey Stanley's throw.  Wood got the win (18-9, 2.22)  Coleman took the loss (17-4, 2.80)  White Sox 1 Tigers 0

1971 Detroit at Chicago

Playing now

197 Chicago at Atlants

Monday August 16.  Fergie Jenkins was everything on this day, pitcher and hitter. He drove home two of the four Cubs's runs and allowed only two more hits than he had on the day.  Walking none, striking out 9, Jenkins had complete command.  No Brave reached second base and three of their singles were followed by Cub double plays.  Jenkins won his 19th game (19-7, 2.26).  Dick Kelley took the loss (8-5, 2.14)  Cubs 4  Braves 0

Tuesday August 17. Bill Hands had his typical outing.  Untouchable early, then a firestorm.  The Braves scored first in the third on a Mike Lum double.  The Cubs answered in the fourth with three runs on a Johnny Callison double, Brock Davis single and J.C. Martin sacrifice fly. Henry Aaron stroked a two run homer in the fifth (33) to tie the game. The Braves added three more in the 6th.  Ron Reed (12-7, 4.66) allowed only one more run.  Hands took the loss (11-14, 4.85).  "We have to have some kind of consistency from our starters behind Fergie.  Even those Boston Braves had two pitchers," referring to Spahn and Sain and pray for rain. "All we got is Jenkins and train wreckin's."  Its clear that Manager Tom Davis is at odds with his pitching staff.  Braves 6 Cubs 4

Wednesday, August 18.  Milt Pappas must have been listening to the anger in his manager's voice yesterday.  He went the distance and allowed only 3 rus on 8 hits.  However,  it was too much as Phil Niekro gave up only one run in winning his 20th game.  Earl William hit a two run homer in the first (29) and Lum his 19th in the third.  Niekro moved to 20-5, 2.07.  Pappas pitched well but took and loss (9-12, 3.35).  Manager Tom Davis was again disgusted with part of teams perfomance.  "We need to sacrifice a few goats.  Or maybe get someone up here who knows voodoo.  Whatever happened to Pedro Cerrano?"    Braves 3  Cubs 1

Mets take 2 of 3 from Dodgers...Series Played Live in Albany, NY

8/16 - 8/18 - Dodger stadium - Los Angeles, CA
GAME 1 - NYM 9, LAD 2
If you're going to beat a great one like Tom Seaver (18-7, 1.61) you have to get to him early. The Dodgers did just that by scoring 2 in the first. Unfortunately for them, when your starter gives up 7 runs you need to get to Seaver often. T
hat never happens. LA nursed their 2-0 lead for 4 innings, until the anemic Met offense exploded for 7 runs off of Doyle Alexander. Kenny Singleton whacked a 3 run shot to take all of the air out of LA's sails as the Mets won the opener. Cleon "when the van is a rocking, don't come a-knockin" Jones went 4 for 5 with 4 RBI's to pace the offense.

GAME 2 - NYM 3, LAD 1
Nolan Ryan (8-7, 2.23) fanned 10 before tiring early (6th inn). Former closer Ron Taylor tossed a a scoreless 2 scoreless innings in relief to setup Danny Frisella who struck out the side in the 9th for his 18th save to notch the second game of the series. Claude
Osteen was fantastic for 7 of his 8 innings of work. Unfortunately for him the 6th inning was not so kind to him as the Mets posted a 3 spot. Bob Aspromonte clobbered a 2 runs shot, his 4th of the year, to pace the offense. LA's offense again didn't show up as they posted only 5 hits all game.

GAME 3 - LAD 6, NYM 0
Don Sutton (15-5, 2.76) has been LA's stopper all year, and this game would not be different. Sutton spins a 1 hitter as the LA offense finally came to life to salvage the finale game of the series. Richie Allen went 3 for 4 and had a huge 3 4uns shot in the 5th. Steve Garvey hit his 6th homer of the season. Kenny Singleton had the Mets lone hit, which
occurred in the 3rd.

NOTES: This series was played live h2h in Albany, NY as part of the Giants Training Camp / Baseball HOF road trip. Coach Jay Schneider and John "Popeye" Doyle were in the audience recreating the old "den" feel. Howie Fortel took it to old rival Marc Weiss in this classic series.

1971 Tigers at Twins

Friday August 13.  The Twins opened the scoring in the third on a Harmon Killebrew sacrifice fly. The Tigers got two back in the fourth on a Bill Freehan homer (25)  Les Cain threw five good innings for the Tigers but tired and gave way to Dean Chance.  After Chance gave up a single and two walks in the seventh to load the bases, he complained his arm was sore and Fred Schermann came in to relieve him.  Scherman gave up another walk to tie the game.  In the ninth, the Tigers hit a three pack off Bert Blyleven.  Dalton Jones led off, pinchhitting for Schermann and hit his 8th homer of the season.  Dick McAuliffe followed with his 15th and Gates Brown made it back-to-back-to-back with his 6th.  Scherman got the win (6-5) and Timmermann the save (6)  Tigers 5 Twins 3

Saturday August 14.  Joe Coleman has not been blessed with much run support this season, and today was no different.  The Tigers, who throughout their history have made rookie pitchers look like the next coming of Walter Johnson, managed only 5 hits of Steve Luebber (1-3) and two runs.  They scored in the 6th on a double by Freehan and in the 8th on a groundout by Aurelio Rodriguez.  Fortunately, that was all Coleman (17-3) needed.  Tigers 2 Twins 0.

Sunday August 15.  Sad news from Tigerland.  Dean Chance, who left Friday's game with a sore arm has been put on the disabled list.  It appears the 1964 Cy Young winner is done for the year and possibly for his career.  "My am is completly dead," the righthander said before the game.  "It is much worse than in 69.  I guess it only had a certain number of innings in it and I have used them up."  Chance was very philosophical about it.  "I'll hang around and do some rehab, but it doesnt look like I will throw again this season.  Maybe I can help out with some of the younger guys on the staff."  Chance, only thirty, was asked whether he would go into coaching if his career was over.  "No," he replied.  "I couldnt be that close to the game and not be on the field.  What I have always wanted to do was to manage boxers.  I might give that a try."

The Tigers activated Mike Kilkenney from the disabled list and started him today.  Kilkenney (3-6) responded with 7 and two thirds innings of shutout ball.  Freehan singled home runs in the first and fifth and the Bengals picked up two more in the sixth.  Kilkenney's win was saved by Scherman (13)  Tigers 4 Twins 1

1971 Cubs at Reds

Played head to head between Tom Davis and Bill Keller

Friday August 13.  For six and a half innings Bill Hands (11-13) and Don Gullett (14-7) didnt give an inch.  Then in the bottom of the 7th, Hands gave up yards.  3 of them, to Johnny Bench (21), Tommy Helms (4) and Dave Concepcion (1)  Reds 6 Cubs 0

Saturday August 14. Billy Williams opened the game with his 21st homer of the season.  Bench matched that with his 22nd in the bottom of the second and then Concepcion doubled in another to make the score 2-1.  In the bottom of th sixth, the Big Red Machine picked up two more on back to back homers by Bench (23) and George Foster (12).  The Cubs refused to quit and came back in the seventh with four runs on rbi singles by Don Kessinger and Glenn Beckert and a two run double by Williams.  In the bottom of the ninth, Concepcion struck again with his second homer in two days and his second of the season to tie the game at 5.  In the 10th, the Cubs loaded the bases with no outs but Wayne Granger (3-5) got the next two hitters without giving up a run.  J.C. Martin  then singled home two for a 7-5 lead.  Phil Regan came on to close out the game and got Pete Rose to ground out.  However, he walked Hal McRae and Lee May singled.  Tony Perez went down on strikes which brought up Bench.  Cubs manager Tom Davis signaled to Regan to walk Bench, but Regan came off the mound and yelled at his manager to mind his own business.  On a 2-1 pitch, Bench launched a Regan (5-7) screwball into the seats for his third homer of the game (24) and a 8-7 walk off win. Reds 8 Cubs 7

Sunday Augusr 15.  Willims again opened the game with a homer in the first (22).  Then added a three run shot in the 3rd (23).  In the 7th, Perez opened with a triple and scored on a Bench sacrifice fly.  Foster doubled and Concepcion who was a thord in the Cubs side all weekend, singled him home.  In the 8th, Lee May cut the lead to one with his 27th homer.  But that was all the ageless Juan Pizarro would give up as he went the distance for the win (5-1).  Ross Grimsely started for the Reds and took the loss (9-4)  Cubs 3  Reds 3

Davis will Save us !

GAME 2 - Dodger Stadium - LA 2, MON 0 (11 inn)
Bill Stoneham and Al Downing hooked up in a classic pitcher's duel. Neither hurler would surrender a run over 9 innings. Neither hurler would get a decision as the contest went extra frames. LA had numerous chances to score and in many cases ran themselves out of an inning. It sure looked like that would occur again in the bottom of the 11th when Jose Pena led off with a single, Bobby V attempted to bunt him over to second, but wound up forcing him instead. To compound his misfortune Valentine was thrown out attempting to steal second by John Bateman. With 2 outs Manny Mota worked out a walk off of Expo reliever Mike Marshall. A wild pitch moved Mota up to second and obviously rattled Marshall, because on the first pitch to Willie Davis he served up a tape measure shot to right field to give Davis a walk off 2 run homer.
