Bosox top Chisox 3-2

Chicago (A) has won 6 straight. Mike Nagy starts for Boston. He's made 4 starts on the year, with no decisions and an ERA of 3.66. He'll be opposed by Tom Bradley. He's made 5 starts on the year and is 3 and 1 with an ERA of 2.13. It's 61 degrees, wind speed 5 mph, left to right.

No score until the bottom of the 2nd when Mike Andrews took Mike Nagy deep to left with a 439 foot tape measure shot with 2 outs. Chicago blew a great chance to score in the 4th when Carlos May attempted to stretch a single to center into a double, but Billy Conigliaro threw a bullet to Doug Griffin at second to nail May. As is always the case, the guy who made the great defensive play the previous inning leads off the following inning and gets a hit. Conigliaro laced a double down the left field line on an 0-2 offering by Bradley. Duane Josephson flew out to center and Doug Griffin hit a slow roller to third that Bill Melton could not make a play on to put runners on the corners with 1 out. Bradley reared back and fanned his opposing number Mike Nagy for the second out, which left it up to Aparicio who grounded out weakly to Melton.

Reggie Smith led off the top of the 6th with a clean single to right. Bradley uncorked a wild pitch and Smith moved down to 2nd with Yaz at the plate. On the next pitch Bradley hung a curve that Yaz blasted over Johnstone's head in center for a two base hit. Smith scored easy to tie the score at 1 all. Petrocelli failed to advance Yaz when he pulled a grounder to Melton at third. Bradley walked the boomer, George Scott on 4 pitches in an obvious "pitch around" scenario. Billy C stepped up to the plate and walked on 4 pitches himself to load the bases with 1 out. Catcher Duane Josephson singled through the hole to score 2 as both baserunners advanced to second and third on Rich Reichardt's errant throw to the plate. Doug Griffin lined to short for the second out and pitcher Mike Nagy fanned to end the inning as Boston led 3-1.

Nagy got into trouble in the bottom of the 7th...all with 2 out. After he loaded the bases veteran Bobby Bolin was called on to get the final out as catcher Ed Hermann lofted a shallow fly to Smith in right. In the bottom of the 8th Rich Morales, pinch hitting for Bradley, doubled with 1 out off of Bolin. Lee Richard single to put runners at the corners with 1 out. Ken Brett was brought on to face lefty Ed Stroud. Walt Williams was immediately summoned from the bench to pinch hit and he walked on 5 pitches to load the bases. Carlos May single on a 3-2 fastball to make it 3-2 as the bases remained jammed. That was it for Brett who failed to get the two batters that he faced out. Ken Tatum was summoned from the pen to put out the raging fire as Rich Reichardt strolled to the plate. Tatum went 3-0 on Reichardt who in advisably swung at the 3-0 offering and fouled it back, then popped the 3-1 offering to Scott at 1st for the 2nd out. Bill Melton flew out to Yaz in left to end the inning, which blew a golden opportunity for the Chisox to tie the game and possibly take the lead.

Reliever Ken Tatum led off with a clean single to left center. Aparicio dropped a perfect sac bunt down the third base line to advance Tatum to second. Reggie Smith then flew out to Walt Williams in shallow right to bring up Yaz in a clutch spot with the Bosox in need of a key insurance run. Yaz would not get the chance to perform as he was intentionally passed in order to face Petrocelli, who promptly struck out.

Tatum would get Andrews to pop to Petrocelli in foul ground for the first out of the inning. With 2 lefties scheduled up left Tatum's work was done for the day as southpaw Sparky Lyle ran in from the pen. Luis Alvarado was brought in to pinch hit for Ed Hermann and grounded weakly to short. Down to their final out the Chisox's hope rested on Jay Johnstone's shoulders. Johnstone took a good 2-0 offering and popped it up to Billy C in short center to end the game. Nagy got his first win of the season and Lyle notched his second save. Bradley, who struck out 8 and only yielded 3 runs, was the hard luck loser as his record dropped to 3-2.
