Combined No-hit Gem - May 17, 1971

Rudy May and Dave LaRoche combined to no hit the Minnesota Twins 1 -0. A walk in the 2nd inning and another walk in the 7th were the only way any Twin reached base. May struck out 11, and LaRoche 2, as the Angels hurlers completely dominated the Minnesota hitters. Hard-luck loser Bert Blyleven pitched a fine, complete game himself yielding only 4 hits. His only mistake was an RBI double to Angels' catcher John Stephenson, which plated the only run of the game.

The real mystery here is why the APC Computer Manager chose to lift May for LaRoche in the top of the 8th inning. Although May was pitching on full rest and has an EPC of 125, the Computer Manager pulled him after only 88 pitches! What's more, he had NOT been pulled for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 7th inning, and the reliever brought in to replace May was also a LHP. So what is the possible rational for pulling May?! --submitted by Douglas Zaner--
