197 Chicago at Atlants

Monday August 16.  Fergie Jenkins was everything on this day, pitcher and hitter. He drove home two of the four Cubs's runs and allowed only two more hits than he had on the day.  Walking none, striking out 9, Jenkins had complete command.  No Brave reached second base and three of their singles were followed by Cub double plays.  Jenkins won his 19th game (19-7, 2.26).  Dick Kelley took the loss (8-5, 2.14)  Cubs 4  Braves 0

Tuesday August 17. Bill Hands had his typical outing.  Untouchable early, then a firestorm.  The Braves scored first in the third on a Mike Lum double.  The Cubs answered in the fourth with three runs on a Johnny Callison double, Brock Davis single and J.C. Martin sacrifice fly. Henry Aaron stroked a two run homer in the fifth (33) to tie the game. The Braves added three more in the 6th.  Ron Reed (12-7, 4.66) allowed only one more run.  Hands took the loss (11-14, 4.85).  "We have to have some kind of consistency from our starters behind Fergie.  Even those Boston Braves had two pitchers," referring to Spahn and Sain and pray for rain. "All we got is Jenkins and train wreckin's."  Its clear that Manager Tom Davis is at odds with his pitching staff.  Braves 6 Cubs 4

Wednesday, August 18.  Milt Pappas must have been listening to the anger in his manager's voice yesterday.  He went the distance and allowed only 3 rus on 8 hits.  However,  it was too much as Phil Niekro gave up only one run in winning his 20th game.  Earl William hit a two run homer in the first (29) and Lum his 19th in the third.  Niekro moved to 20-5, 2.07.  Pappas pitched well but took and loss (9-12, 3.35).  Manager Tom Davis was again disgusted with part of teams perfomance.  "We need to sacrifice a few goats.  Or maybe get someone up here who knows voodoo.  Whatever happened to Pedro Cerrano?"    Braves 3  Cubs 1
