Fishing for compliments

GAME 3 - RFK Stadium - CAL 2, WAS 1
With 2 outs and the bases loaded Dave Nelson hit a weak roller to Sandy Alomar, Sr. at second and barely beat it out. On the play Don Mincher scored the first run of the day. Eddie Fisher (7-6, 2.86) fanned Tim Cullen to end the frame and prevent further damage. Pitcher Eddie Fisher singled home Roger Repoz who led off the inning with a single, to tie it. Alomar flew out to Unser in center and Bruce Christensen tagged up to make it 2-1 Cal. With one out in the 5th Unser walked and promptly stole second. Lenny Randle flew out weakly to center and Don Mincher swung at a ball in the dirt on a 3-2 count to end the inning. Tommy McCraw led off the 6th with a walk and stole 2nd on a knuckleball in the dirt by Fisher, but the next 3 batters couldn't get the ball out of the infield as Washington blew a golden opportunity to tie the game. Randle walked to lead off the bottom of the 8th and that marked the end of Fisher's day as the lefty Dave LaRoche was brought on to face lefty Don Mincher. Frank Howard came off the bench to hit for Mincher and immediately found himself deep in a 1-2 hole. LaRoche was able to jam Jumbo Frank and get him to pop out to 3rd for the first out of the inning. Bernie Allen came on board to pinch hit for McCraw and he served up a nice easy DP ball to end the inning. LaRoche set the Nats down in order to end it. Washington dropped another low scoring 1 run game.
