Bosox fire Weiss...

August 9, 1971 - Boston, MA [AP]
The Yawkey family deeply regrets the announcement that they will be parting company with their embattled manager Marc Weiss (pictured above in happier times). Siting philisophical differences, the organization and everyone around the club knew it was painfully clear that their manager and star ballplayer (Carl Yaztrzemski) were not getting along. For months Weiss has been leaking to the media that Yaz' attitude was a cancer in the clubhouse and his .219 batting average and lack of clutch hitting has failed the team miserably.

When asked for comment Yaz refused to get involved. The surly superstar did say, "The ballclub has a lot of talent on it and to be 1 game under .500 (56-57) and 15 games out at this point in the season is an embarrassment to the organization and the great city of Boston.

Weiss, who considered managing Boston his dream job, was regretful that it had to end this way. "I feel that I was brought here to get an underachieving club to the next level. Some of the ballplayers really played hard and produced, some did not. I will take this as a learning experience and hopefully do better in my next opportunity." When asked about his contentious relationship with Yaz, Weiss was quoted as saying, "Look I can't lie to you, you all have seen what went on here for over 100 games. Yaz is a great talent. I only wish we were both on the same page. When players perform poorly they fire the manager, not the players".

Speculation on who will manage the club has been running rampant. Boston is 4 years removed from their Impossible Dream pennant of 1967. Many of that same core group of talented players still remain on the team. They Yawkey family was forced into the move as fans threatened to burn their tickets after the team dropped 4 of 5 to Detroit in their last series to drop below .500.
