Thursday August 5. An Al Kaline solo shot (15) and a two run dinger by Bill Freehan (22) staked Les Cain to a 3-0 run lead in the first inning. Kaline hit another homer (16) in the third and BoSox pitcher Gary Peters promptly hit Willie Horton. Horton looked like he was going to charge the mound but was restrained by Sox catcher Bob Montgomery and on deck hitter Bill Freehan. Still Horton was mumbling all the way down to first. In the fourth, Kaline continued to beat on Peters like an old dog when he singled home two more Tiger runs. The BoSox finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a George Scott single. Scott led off the 7th with a homer (11) and then four more Boston hitters added an rbi apiece to tie the game at 6. In the Tigers' 8th, Ike Brown led off with a single and then Eddie Brinkman was hit by a pitch. Pinchhitter Norm cash hit into a double play. Ken Tatum intentionally walked Aurelio Rodriguez to face Tony taylor. Knowing that Sparky Lyle was in the bullpen, Taylor was left in to face Tatum. He responded with a singl to drive in the winning run. The win went to recent call up Jack Willock (1-0). Fred Scherman got his 12th save. Ken tatum took the loss (1-2) Tigers 7 Red Sox 6
Friday, August 6. The tenson between the two teams continued today as Ray Culp hit Horton in the first inning. Rather than charge the mound, Horton would get even by getting hits in his next three at bats. The Tigers scored in the third when Culp (11-10) walked Cash with the bases loaded. Scott doubled home Reggis Smith in the 4th to tie the game. Dick McAuliffe opened the fifth with a triple and Horton singled him home. When Horton reached first he pointed at Culp and some words were exchanged that cant be printed here. Rodriguez opened the sixth with a triple and scored on Brinkman's grouondout. Joe Coleman (16-3) held the BoSox in check until he tired after getting te first two hitters in the ninth. After Bob Montgomery singled, Fred Schermann was brought in. He gave up a run scoring double to Billy Conigliaro. Tom Timmerman (save 4) came in to get Doug Griffin to end the game. Tigers 3 Red Sox 2
Saturday August 7. Horton continued to avenge himself on BoSox pitching with a sacrifice fly in the first. Jim Northrup singled home another run. Joe Niekro (5-3) gave up solo homers to Smith (24) in the first and to Rico Petrocelli (15) in the second. Boston took their only lead of the series in the third when Carl Yastrzemski singled home a run. But in the fourth, the Tigers would send 11 batters to the plate. Cash opened the inning with a single and scored on Northrup's (19) homer. Niekro hit a bases loaded, no out sacrifice fly, then Gates Brown drove home two with a single. Cash finished the scoring with a single. The Tigers added a run in the 5th and the Sahx got two back in the sixth on a Scott homer (12). Petrocelli hit his second homer of the day in the 8th (16) but that ended the scorng. Sonny Siebert (13-10) took the loss. Tigers 10 Red Sox 6
Sunday, August 8. The Sahx were looking to salvage one game from this four game series, but they would have to do it against Mickey Lolich. Luis Tiant was not up to the task, giving up a homer to Freehan (23) in the second, rbi singles to Freehan and Rodriguez in the 4th and a two run shot to Freehan (24) in the sixth. McAuliffe led off the 7th with his 14th homer of the season. The Sox could only manage 5 hits against Lolich and only had two runners on base once. Lolich walked none and struck out 6 in earning his 7th shutout of the season (23-7) Tigers 6 Red sox 0
