1971 Cubs at Pirates

Tuesday, August 10. 34 year old Juan Pizarro took the mound today for the Cubs and pitched his heart out for 7 and one third innings.  The Cubbies staked him to one run in the first on a Joe Pepitone single and though they threatened often against Pirate starter Bruce Kison (4-2), could not manage another run, in part due to 4 Buc double plays.  Pizarro's day ended in the 8th when he allowed Gene Alley to hit a two run homer (6) to give the Pirates the lead.  Sweating profusely in the 90+ degree heat, Pizarro gave way to Bill Bonham (2-1).  Bonham finished the 8th, then in the 9th, the Cubs finished Kison, sending 10 men to the plate and scoring four times, including a Jim Hickman three run homer (19). Bonham got the Pirates 1-2-3 in the 9th sendng everyone to the relief of the showers.  Cubs 5 Pirates 2.

Wednesday, August 11.  Ferguson Jenkins and Doc Ellis butted heads in a game that was much like the one of the previous day.  Neither team could do anything against the opposing starter for the first four innings.  The Cubs brok through in the fifth when Ellis mishandled a Billy Williams grounder, allowing Don Kessinger to score from third.  The Cubs gave back the error when righfielder Jim Hickman misplayed a Manny Sanguillen single allowing Al Oliver to advance to third.  Alley singled home Oliver and then Ellis squeezed home Sanguillen for the go ahead run.  The Cubs showed their resiliency in the 6th.  Singles by Ron Santo, Brock Davis and Jenkins produced one run.  Don Kessinger singled home another, then Glenn Beckert, who was 4 for 4 on the dat, singled home one more.  Jenkins gave up a run in the 6th but then held the Pirates hitless the rest of the way, allowing only one runner to get to base, on a Kessinger error   J.C Martin helped Jenkins (18-7) out by throwing out two Pirates attempting to steal.  Ellis (19-8) tok the loss.  Cubs 4 Pirates 3
