Monday, August 9. A scheduling conflict was discovered as the Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops had booked Fenway Park for an evening cncert on Sept 23 while the two teams were to play a day game, so the teams agreed to play a fifth game today since both teams had open dates. Although the two teams scheduled the game late, nearly 29,000 rabid Sox fans came out. They were not disappointed. It is probably never a good idea to start the same pitcher twice in the same series, but Les Cain took the mound nevertheless. Cain pitched well and left the game with a 2-1 lead. Alas, Tom Timmerman (6-2) could not hold that lead. The Tigers scored twice in the second off Jim Lonborg on a Cain sac fly and a McAuliffe double. Cain gave up a solo homer to Smith (24) in the 6th. In the 8th, the Sox hitters finally realised they were supposed to hit the ball where the fielders werent. Smith doubled home two and was singled home by Conigliaro. Then Petrocelli, pinchhitting against Ron Perronoski, hit a two run homer to put the game out of reach. Ken Tatum (2-2) got the win. Red Sox 6 Tigers 2
