8/8/71 - Busch Memorial Stadium - Dodgers 8, Cards 0

The Dodgers jumped right on Jerry Reuss and scored 2 in the opening stanza. Maury Wills led off with a single and immediately scored when Manny Mota tripled him home. Willie Davis grounded out to short to score Mota and make it 2-0. St. Louis threatened to score off of Don Sutton (13-5, 2.85) in the bottom of the first, but a nifty 3-6-3 DP off of Ted Simmons put the kibosh on that. Joe Torre didn't have a chance to extend his streak as Sutton beaned him on the first pitch. The Busch Stadium crowd was so silent you could hear a pin drop until St. Joe rose to his feet. The Dodgers loaded the bases themselves in the 2nd and St. Louis returned the favor with a 4-6-3 DP of their own off the bat of Wills, who at 39 does not move like he did a decade earlier. Not to be outdone LA turned a 5-4-3 DP on the even faster Brock to end a bases loaded threat in the bottom of the 2nd. A real trend

was now starting. In his second AB Torre flew out to right. With bases loaded in the top of the 4th Wills grounded weakly to third to score Wes Parker. The bases loaded DP hex was broken. Manny Mota doubled home two to make it 5-0. With runners on the corners and 1 out Lou Brock hit a medium fly ball to Willie Davis in center. Ted Kubiak tagged from third but was pegged by Davis at the plate to end the inning and keep Sutton's shutout in tact. In the bottom of the 5th, Torre grounded out weakly to Wills at short. With 2 outs in the 6th Richie Allen hit a bases clearing double to make it 7-0 and chase Reuss from the mound in favor of Chuck Taylor. In what sure looked like his last AB of the game Torre walked on 5 pitches to open the home half of the 8th. The Cards went weakly in the 9th and Sutton recorded the complete game shutout, but more importantly Joe Torre's 36 game hitting streak came to an end.
