Friday August 20, (second game) Ken Holtzman came off the diabled list to provide some much needed assistance to the Cubs starting rotation behind Jenkins. Maybe he needed more time. He gave up six runs on nine hits in just three innnings of work, (9-12, 5.42) Jesus Also and Jack Hiatt both had three hits while big first baseman Bob Watson went 4-4 with 2 rbis. Ken forsch (4-8, 3.59) was the winner. Astros 8 Cubs 2
Saturday August 21 . Bill Hands (11-15, 4.82) scattering 10 hits and giving up 3 runs in 7 innings. But the Cub bullpen couldnt hold the Stros close as Bob Watson hit a three run homer in the 9th (5). Billy Williams homered for the Cubs (24). Jack Billingham had a great outing, pitching into he 9th (11-11, 3.02) to even his record. Astros 6 Cubs 2
Sunday August 22. Milt Pappas had gone the distance in his last outing only to be out pitched by Phil Niekro. The Astros do not have a Niekro on their staff and this time Pappas' full game outing went into he win column (10-12, 3.29) Wade Blasingame was hit hard and often in less than 5 innings of work (8-10 4.14). Ron Santo hit a two run homer (12) and Johnny Callison added a solo shot late in the game (6) Cubs 9 Astros 2 .
