Friday August 13. For six and a half innings Bill Hands (11-13) and Don Gullett (14-7) didnt give an inch. Then in the bottom of the 7th, Hands gave up yards. 3 of them, to Johnny Bench (21), Tommy Helms (4) and Dave Concepcion (1) Reds 6 Cubs 0
Saturday August 14. Billy Williams opened the game with his 21st homer of the season. Bench matched that with his 22nd in the bottom of the second and then Concepcion doubled in another to make the score 2-1. In the bottom of th sixth, the Big Red Machine picked up two more on back to back homers by Bench (23) and George Foster (12). The Cubs refused to quit and came back in the seventh with four runs on rbi singles by Don Kessinger and Glenn Beckert and a two run double by Williams. In the bottom of the ninth, Concepcion struck again with his second homer in two days and his second of the season to tie the game at 5. In the 10th, the Cubs loaded the bases with no outs but Wayne Granger (3-5) got the next two hitters without giving up a run. J.C. Martin then singled home two for a 7-5 lead. Phil Regan came on to close out the game and got Pete Rose to ground out. However, he walked Hal McRae and Lee May singled. Tony Perez went down on strikes which brought up Bench. Cubs manager Tom Davis signaled to Regan to walk Bench, but Regan came off the mound and yelled at his manager to mind his own business. On a 2-1 pitch, Bench launched a Regan (5-7) screwball into the seats for his third homer of the game (24) and a 8-7 walk off win. Reds 8 Cubs 7
Sunday Augusr 15. Willims again opened the game with a homer in the first (22). Then added a three run shot in the 3rd (23). In the 7th, Perez opened with a triple and scored on a Bench sacrifice fly. Foster doubled and Concepcion who was a thord in the Cubs side all weekend, singled him home. In the 8th, Lee May cut the lead to one with his 27th homer. But that was all the ageless Juan Pizarro would give up as he went the distance for the win (5-1). Ross Grimsely started for the Reds and took the loss (9-4) Cubs 3 Reds 3
