Monday August 2. Willie Horton singled home a run in the first and that was all the scoring until Frank Howard tied the game with two out in the top of the ninth with his 18th homer. Paul Lindblad (4-2) had replaced Pete Broberg in the 8th and he gave up a lead off single in the bottom of the ninth to Al Kaline who had replaced Horton defensively. Jim Northrup doubled him to third. After Bill Freehan was intentionally passed, Eddie Brinkman ended the game with a sacrifice fly. Joe Coleman went the distance (15-3). Tigers 2 Senators 1

Tuesday August 3. Al Kaline (14) and Gates Brown (5) hit back to back homers in the first off former teammate Denny McLain (6-10). McLain singled home a run in the 5th to close the gap but gave up a three run homer to Dick McAuliffe (14) in the bottom half of the inning. After Dave Billings opened the 7th with his third homer of the season, McLain doubled home two more runs to again cut the lead to one. However, once again, McLain couldnt keep the Tigers within one as he gave up a two run double to Kaline in the bottom of the 7th. Each team scored once in the 8th. Joe Niekro (4-3) was the winner, with Tom Timmerman getting the save (3) Tigers 8 Senators 6

Wednesday August 4. Mickey Lolich knocked in the first Tiger run in the 2nd with a bases loaded groundout. For a long time, it looked like that would be all the Tigers would get, or need. The Tigers added a run in the 6th on a Brinkman sacrifice fly. In the top of the 7th, Howard again supplied the only run the Senators would get, blasting a Lolich offering into the centerfield upper deck bleachers (19). Norm Cash, leading off the 8th after coming in as a defensive replacement, hit his 31st homer. Lolich won his 22nd game against 7 losses, striking out 11. Dick Bosman (3-17) pitched well but took the loss. Tigers 4 Senators 1 --submitted by Tom "Crash" Davis--
