GAME 1 - Dodger Stadium - LA 5, MON 3
Ron Fairly re-paid his old mates by slugging a 2 run shot in the first to put hand Carl Morton (9-13, 3.70) a 2 run lead even before he threw his first pitch. Gary Sutherland led the 2nd off with a triple and scored on John Bateman's pop up that Tom Haller lost in the setting sun. Before you knew it the bases were loaded, but thankfully for the late arriving Chevez Ravine crowd, Boots day bounced into a 4-6-3 DP to end the inning. With one out in the 3rd Willie Crawford reached first on an error by Expo 3rd baseman Ron Hunt. Steve Garvey singled through the hole and Crawford decided to be aggressive and take 3rd on a very close play.

Haller, atoning for his gaffe in the top of the inning singled home Crawford on a frozen rope to right. Bobby V blew the sign on a hit and run play and Garvey was nailed at third. Valentine then grounded out to hunt to end the inning. Montreal loaded the bases in the 3rd, but
Don Sutton (14-5, 2.88) was able to get the weak hitting Bobby Wine to ground to short to end it. For the second inning in a row Montreal loaded the bases, but Sutton again was able to get a ground out and a strike out to sneak away without any damage.

Willie Davis led off with a single and scored when Wes Parker tripled off the wall in right center. Willie Crawford then grounded to Fairly at first to score Parker and tie the game at 3 apiece. That's how the score remained until the bottom of the 6th when Bill Buckner, who reached on an error, scored on a sac fly by Parker. Tom Haller doubled off the right field wall and Bobby V. walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. Sutton was scheduled to bat, but he was called back in favor of pinch hitter Manny Mota, who popped weakly to Fairly at 1st for out #2. Bill Russell was scheduled to bat, but
Joe Ferguson was called upon to pinch hit for him. Joe singled to left to score Haller and put runners on the

corners with the score now 5-3 LA. Buckner grounded weakly to short to force Ferguson for the final out of the inning.
Jim Brewer came on to start the 8th looking for a 6 out save. He was able to get the Expos out easily in his first inning of work. Rusty Staub singled with 1 out in the 9th and Bob Bailey followed suit with 2 outs to put runners on 1st and 3rd, but Brewer was able to get Sutherland to pop out to Davis in center to end it.
