Senators hire Weiss to replace Williams

August 9th, 1971 - Washington, D.C. - [AP]
A few hours after being released from his managerial post in Boston, former Red Sox manager Marc Weiss received a call from Senators owner Bob Short. Short who's team is mirerred with the worst record in baseball and deep in financial trouble, is in need of huge boost. Deep in dept the Senators owe the District of Columbia $184,000 in back rent and taxes on RFK Stadium. With the team so far out of it (39 games under .500 and 34 games out of first), Short is in desperation mode. If the team's attendance at the ballpark doesn't improve cash flow soon, Short has threatened to either file for bankruptcy or sell the team. There is even an outside chance that the franchise may shift to either Dallas, South Florida, Denver or Seattle.

Ray Scott of Washington's WTOP, channel 9 got the chance to interview the Senators new manager. Scott asked Weiss, "How do you think you can help this failing franchise ?" Weiss replied, "This franchise has a great young nucleus coming up from our Denver farm team. We have a premier player in Frank Howard, who I'm excited to work with. Frank is a no nonsense superstar, who doesn't blame others for his misfortune. He will be a great leader for the young folks that will be playing along side of him. I expect to see the Toby Harrah's, the Pete Broberg's, and the Jeff Boroughs' of the world improve this team's standings."

Scott then inquired about the team's financial standing and their ability to stay in the Washington market. Bob Short then replied, "We need the district to work with us as we work through these challenging times. Not having baseball in D.C. would be un-American".

Scott pressed Weiss to explain why he would accept this impossible job only hours after being let go by Boston. Weiss commented, "It's just nice to work someplace where you feel appreciated and where we can build things from the ground up". He will have his work cut out for him !
