Bill Stoneham and Al Downing hooked up in a classic pitcher's duel. Neither hurler would surrender a run over 9 innings. Neither hurler would get a decision as the contest went extra frames. LA had numerous chances to score and in many cases ran themselves out of an inning. It sure looked like that would occur again in the bottom of the 11th when Jose Pena led off with a single, Bobby V attempted to bunt him over to second, but wound up forcing him instead. To compound his misfortune Valentine was thrown out attempting to steal second by John Bateman. With 2 outs Manny Mota worked out a walk off of Expo reliever Mike Marshall. A wild pitch moved Mota up to second and obviously rattled Marshall, because on the first pitch to Willie Davis he served up a tape measure shot to right field to give Davis a walk off 2 run homer.
