New manger...same old result. Washington's inability to score runs and Pete Broberg's immaturity combined to sink the Nats on more time in this battle for the cellar. On the positve side rookie Dave Nelson stole 2 bases and went 3 for 4. Elliott Maddox was 2 for 4 as well.
RFK Stadium - WAS 2, CLE 0

Hard luck Denny McLain (7-10, 3.12) toed the rubber today for the first time for his new manager. The former Detroit bad boy got into trouble early when he loaded the bases in the top of the 3rd. McClain was able to dig down deep and get Vada Pinson to pop out to second and Chris Chambliss to pop out to right in order to get out of trouble.

Toby Harrah led off the bottom of the inning with a 347 foot homer to left off of Cleveland starter Steve Dunning to make it 1-0 Sens. Later in the inning Del Unser doubled and Don Mincher singled him home with 2 outs to make it 2-0. That is how the game would end as McClain showed flashes of brilliance like in his magical '68 season as he tossed a complete game 3 hit shutout and rewarded his new skipper with his first victory in our Nation's capital.
