1971 Cubs at Mets

Friday July 30. Joe Pepitone opened the scoring with a three run homer (11) in the first. The Cubs added another run in the 2nd on a Chris Cannizzaro double. The Mets came back with two in the bottom of the second. The Cubs stretched their lead out to 3 with a run in the third, and then out to four when Pepitone hit his fifth homer in the last five days and his second of the game (12) in the sixth. Bill Hands (11-10) kept the Mets at bay the rest of the way, though Mike Marshall hit his second homer of the season in the 8th. Gary Gentry (8-8) took the loss. Cubs 6 Mets 4

Saturday July 31. Milt Pappas (8-11) and Ray Sadecki (7-1) hooked up in a real old fashioned pitcher's duel. Each went the whole way. The only run came in the fourth when Ken Boswell walked was singled to second by Jerry Grote, bunted to third by Sadecki and knocked home by Bud Harrelson. Mets 1 Cubs 0

Sunday August 1. Tom Seaver, leading the National League in wins and earned average, took the mound for the rubber game of the series fo the Mets. He was oppposed by Juan Pizarro, who came into the game with 2-1 record and 5.40 era. Each pitcher threw a complete game, gave up five hits and struck out 7. Pizarro walked five while Seaver walked six. The Cubs got single runs in the 2nd, 6th and 8th, with J.C. Martin getting one rbi and Jim Hickman, 2. The Mets were unable to punch anything across against Pizarro. Seaver took the loss (16-6) while Pizarro got the win (3-1) Cubs 3 Mets 0 --submitted by Tom "crash" Davis--
