Deep Friar

[7/1 - 7/3 @ Jack Murphy Stadium, San Diego, CA]
GAME 1 (LA 6, SD 5):
Don Sutton fanned 10 over 7 innings of work. He also gave up 10 hits and 3 runs and was dead tired when he left the game with a 6-3 lead. Pete Mikkelsen decided to be generous and give 2 back in the bottom of the 9th after pinch hitter Downtown Ollie Brown went downtown. Jim Brewer had to come on to save the day and notch his 13th save of the season. Sutton notched his 8th win. Billy Grabarkewitz, Enzon Hernandez and Cito Gaston all had 3 hits.

GAME 2 (SD 6, LA 3):
Clay Kirby (7-8, 2.94) went the distance and was masterful over every Dodger hitter except Wes Parker who was 3 for 4 with 2 solo shots. Larry Stahl hit a 2 run shot in the 7th to put the game on ice. Doyle Alexander (0-3, 5.84) was brutal
vs the normally anemic Padre lineup.

GAME 3 (SD 2, LA 0):
Dave Roberts (10-4, 1.79) continued to his Cy Young-like season in annonymity as he shutout the Dodgers by scattering 7 hits over 9 innings. San Diego scored both of their runs in the 3rd off of hard luck loser Al Downing. Only 1 of those runs were earned as errors and Downing's wildness conspired to be his undoing. His team's silent bats also ensured defeat. Dodger tablesetter Maury Wills was on twice, but again failed to rekindle his base stealing prowess of the previous decade. Wills has become a more accomplished hitter during his second tour of duty in LA, but his legs, which used to be his trademark, have betrayed him.
