GAME 1 PIT 3, HOU 0 (16 inn): The opener went 16 innings. PIT scored 3 runs in the top of the 16th of Jim Ray to win it. Both teams banged out 10 hits in the contest. Jose Pagan and Dave Cash knocked in the runs. Jim "Mudcat" Grant (1-0) notched the win with 1 1/3 innings of work.
GAME 2 HOU 1, PIT 0: Steve Blass gave up a run in the first and Larry Dierker made it stand with 8 innings of shutout ball. Fred Gladding fanned
2 in the 9th for his 6th save. Bob Watson knocked in Jesus Alou for the game's lone run. Dierker is now 9-3.
GAME 3 PIT 5, HOU 3: Dock Ellis (8-3) went the distance by scattering 5 hits and yielding only 2 runs, which were supplied by the Toy Cannon, Jimmy Wynn's 6th homer of the season and a double in the 9th. Clemente went 3 for 4 to boost his season average to .377
