If only you believe in miracles...

[GAME 1 Shea Stadium - NYM 2, LA 1]
The fans came expecting a classic pitching matching with two future HOF'ers on the hill...The fans got EXACLY what they paid for. Both Tom "Terrific" Seaver and Don Sutton were billiant. LA looked to have Seaver on the ropes in the 2nd, when they scored their lone run, but "the franchise" was just not going to fold. Bobby V doubled home Richie Allen with 2 outs, but that would be it for LA. Sutton pretty much knew that he'd have to make that 1 run stand, which he did until he tired with 1 out in the 7th. Joe Moller came on and was good until the 9th, where he and Jim Brewer combined to blow the game. Seaver went the distance,
fanned 8, and walked away with his 12th win. New York scored 2 in the 9th (with
2 out) to crush LA's
ego. Bob Aspromonte led off the bottom of the 9th with a walk. Grote popped to Bobby V at 3rd for the 1st out. Don Hahn followed with a bloop single to center to put runners on the corners. Cleon Jones, who was sent up to pinch hit for Seaver grounded to short to score Aspromonte and tie the game. With 2 out Buddy Harrelson parachuted one over Lefebvre's head for the game winning hit.
