1971 Cubs Cards

Friday June 25.  The Cardinals scored first when Luis Melendez tripled to lead off the fifth and scored on MMatty alou's groundout.   However, Al Santorini (0-2) couldnt hold the Cubs in and they scored 4 times in the top of the sixth, the bg blow being a two run single by pitcher Bill Hands (9-5).  The Cubs added solo runs in the 7th and 9th on homers by Billy Williams (14) and Glenn Beckert (2)  Cubs 6 Cards 1

 

Saturday June 26  Joe Pepitone doubled home Beckert in the first to open the scoring.  The Cards came back with a run in the second and two in the third.  In the fifth inning, Bob Gibson lost command.  He gave up five consecutive sngles to start the inning and, after gettting Jim Hickman to groundout, he gave up two more singles.  All told, the Cubs scored five times in the frame to take the lead.  The Cards came back to tie the game in the bottom of the 8th on rbis by Jim Beauchamp and Ted Sizemore.  In the bottom of the ninth with two on and two out, Lou Brock got the game winner with a single to right.  Moe Drabowsky got the win (3-1)  Ken Holtzman took the loss (6-10).  Cardinals 7 Cubs 6

 

Sunday June 27.  The Cardinals were never in this game,  Billy Williams tripled home two in the first and scored on Jim Hickman's single.  The Cubs added a run in the third and in the fourth Ferguson Jenkins (3) led off the ining with a homer.  The Cubs added another run in the frame ad another in the seventh.  The Cardinals got two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a Dal Maxvill single, Alou triple and Sizemore groundout.  Jenkins got the win (10-5)  Steve Carleton took the loss (8-9).  Cubs 7 Cardinals 2.
