Friday July 9 (2nd game) Joe Decker pitched 6.2 scoreless innings to earn his first victory of the season (1-2). Cito Gaston's two run homer (13) in the ninth was all the Padres could muster. Steve Arlin took the loss (5-14) Cubs 4 Padres 2
Saturday July 10. The Cubs scored 4 times in the first, including two on a Joe Pepitone homer (5). Fergie Jenkins (13-5) didnt need any more, but he forgot to tell the Cubs hitters. The Cubbies pounded out 9 more runs including a two run homer by Williams (17) and a solo shot by Jim Hickman (15). However, the highlight of the game came in the top of 8th. Jekins had already struck out three times when he came to the plate with no outs and the bases loaded. Dick Kelley threw a high fatball and Jenkins ripped it t left. Shortstop Enzo Hernandez made a diving catch and flipped the ball to Dave Campbell at second to get Brock Davis and then Campbell whipped the ball to third baseman Gerry Jestadt to retire Pepitone for a TRIPLE PLAY. Sunday July 11 (1st Game) Juan Pizarro (1-1) threw 8 scoreless innings before giving up three runs in the ninth. By that time, however, the Cubbies had notched nine runs of their own off Tom Phoebus (3-10) and other Padre pitchers. J.C. Martin helped Pizarro along the way by throwing out three base stealers. Sunday July 11 (2nd game) It was all Clay Kirby (9-8) in this game as he totally shut down the Cubs on 2 hits and 2 walks. The only runs of the game came in the bottom of the 7th when Ivan Murrell singled home two Padres. Milt Pappas (6-10) was tagged with the loss despite pitching extremely well.
