Marichal, Cumberland and Perry lose in succession as the Giants are swept in humiliating fashion by the lowly Padres. Juan Marichal in particular collapsed in the first game, giving up three home runs. The staff's other ace, Gaylord Perry, didn't fare much better in his start. And the Giant bats were virtually silent, getting shut out in the first game and scoring only three runs total in the series.
