1971 Indians Tigers

Thursday June 24.  Mickey Lolich (15-5) trew bbs at the Indians all night long.  He gave up two hits, one walk and struck out 9.  The Tigers scored five times in the fifth highlighted by Willie Horton's (13) three run homer and a back to backer by Gates Brown.  Alan Foster (2-8) took the loss.  Tigers 5  Indians 0 

 

Friday June 25. Roy Foster started things for the Indians in the first with an rbi single.  The Tigers got the run back in the bottom of the frame on Horton's single.  Dick McAuliffe brought in two more runs with a homer (8) in the third and  sacrifice fly in the 6th.  Then the Tigers jumped all over reliever Jim Colbert in the seventh, scoring three times.  Bill Gilbreth got the win (1-0) in his first start of the season, getting three innings of relief help from Dean Chance who earned his first save.  Steve Dunning took the loss (2-7)  Tigers 7  Indians 2

 

Saturday June 26.  Chris Chambliss doubled home Graig Nettles in the first to get the Indians off to a good start.  However, on Steve Hargan's (2-4) first pich to Dick McAuliffe, Mac tied the game with his 9th homer.  The Tigers added another run in the second on Aurelio Rodriguez' triple, and then two more in the third when Jim Northrup hit a two run homer (14).  That was all the soring as Joe Coleman (10-2) shut down the Tribe on four hits.  Tigers 4 Indians 1.

 

Sunday June 27.  After five innings, the score was Detroit 3, Indians 0.  Mike Kilkenny had given up one hit to the Indians, but the Tigers had only managed two hits off Sudden Sam McDowell.  But McDowell had given up three runs in the first in on a Horton sacrifice fly and two wild pitches.  Kilkenny continued to shut out the Tribe, but ran out of gas after seven innings.  The Tigers turned to Fred Scherman (4-2) who promptly gave up the lead to the Indians with a sngle run and two run homer by Ray Fosse.(7).  The Tribe added another run in the 9th on Nettles' double.  The Tiers had no answer and Scherman took the loss.  Steve Mingori got the win (3-3) and Phil Hennigan the save (6).  Indians 4 Tigers 3
