Culp-Fiction
[Metropolitan Stadium - Boston 4, Minnesota 0]
With bases loaded and 2 out in the 2nd John Kennedy delivered a clean single to center to score 2 runs and put Boston up 2-0. Similar scenario in the 5th occurred when Twin starter Steve Luebber got wild again and walked George Scott to force in a run. He managed to strike out Joe Lahoud and fan Bob Montgomery to limit the damage to 1 run and put the score at 3-0. Minny had second and third in the home half of the 5th but failed to score when Ray Culp tightened things up and got out of the jam. With 1 out in the 6th Luebber allowed Kennedy to reach first with a walk and Aparicio followed that with a clean single. Before Reggie Smith could stroll to the plate Hal Haydel was brought in to replace Luebber. Smith, popped to second, but Yaz walked to load the bases for the 3rd time today, but Petrocelli fanned and no runs scored. With runners on 1st and 3rd and 2 outs in the 8th Yaz flew out to center to continue his A-rod imitation. Petro reached first off of reliever Ron Perranoski to open the 9th when 3rd sacker George Thomas booted a routine grounder. Scott singled to make put runners on 1st and 2nd. Lahoud struck out on a 3-2 slider for the first out of the inning. Montgomery hit into a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners with 2 out and pitcher Ray Culp scheduled to bat. Since he was tossing a shutout there was no way that Culp was going to be removed from the game. Perranoski put one right over the heart of the plate and Culp singled home a run to help his own cause. The inning ended when Kennedey k'd on a 2-2 cutter. The Twins went 3 up and 3 down in the 9th and Culp had himself a 5 hit shutout.
