Saint Peters...

[Anaheim Stadium - Boston 6, California 1]
With 2 outs and the bases loaded Angel starter Tom Murphy hung a 1-1 breaking ball that Rico Petrocelli lined into center to score Reggie Smith and Yaz to give Boston a 2-0 lead. With 2 out in the 4th Boston hurler Gary Peters singled home George Scott from second to help his own cause. Sandy Alomar led off the 6th with a 342 foot homer that just barely hooked inside the foul poll. With Jeff Torborg on 1st and 2 out Muphy was lifted for pinch hitter Syd O'Brien who harmlessly flied to Smith in left center. The Red Sox loaded the bases off of reliever Mel Queen and Josephson singled just past a diving Jim Fregosi at short to score Petro. Mike Fiore fanned on 3 piches in a feeble attempt to pinch hit for Peters. John Kennedy grounded weakly to second to end the Boston threat.

Sparky Lyle came aboard in relief and threw a scoreless 8th. Doug Griffin hit a 2 run opposite
field double off queen to score Yaz and Petro and put Boston up 6-1. Archie Reynolds got Josephson to end the inning with a pop up to Berry in center, but the game was now busted wide open. Lyle set the Angels down in order in the 9th to notch his 7th save of the season. Peters evened his record at 6-6. California was only able to knock out 5 hits in this contest. Peters increased his batting average to .514.
