1971 Phillies Cubs

Thursday July 15.  The Phillies opened the scoring in the top of the second when John Vukovich singled home Deron Johnson.  The Cubs came back with a run in the fourth on a double by Ron Santo and a run in the 6th on a single by Jim Hickman.  Cubs starter Ken Holtzman ran out of gas and was replaced in the 7th by Bill Bonham.  Once again the Cub bullpen was not up to the task.  Johnson singled home one run and a second run came home when Billy Williams overthrew Santo trying to cut down Willie Montanez.  Rick Wise was in control the rest of the way and notched a complete game victory (13-6).  Bill Bonham took the loss (1-1).  Phillies 4 Cubs 2

Friday July 16.  Chris Short (9-6) could not cope with the Chicago hitters and the Phillie hitters could not cope with Ferguson Jenkins (14-5).  Hickman (16) and Jenkins (4) homered for the Cubs.  Cubs 5 Phillies 0

Saturday July 17.  The Cubs struck for five runs in the third, including two bases loaded walks by Woodie Fryman (2-4).  Bill Hands allowd only one run on 6 hits and easily cruised to his tenth victory of the season (10-8).  Cubs 6 Phillies 1
