1971 Detroit at Baltimore

Monday June 28. The two top lefthanders in the American League faced each other in this Monday evening game. But it was the bat of future first ballot Hall of Famer Al Kaline that made the diffrence. A solo homer in the first (7) and a two run shot in the sixth (8) were all the runs the Tigers could manage and all the runs Lolich (16-5) needed. Kaline added a double to account for three of the five hits allowed by Dave McNally (13-3) who had two of the four Oriole hits. Baltimore's only run scored on a Auelio Rodriguez error. Tigers 3 Orioles 1

Tuesday June 29. Les Cain pitched 6.1 innings before running out of gas. He left wth a 1-0 lead

as Pat Dobson was nearly his equal. Dick McAuliffe homered (10) in the 8th to extend the lead to 2. But the Tiger bullpen failed in the bottom of the 8th and the Orioles tied the game on a two run single by Davey Johnson. Norm Cash singled home a run in the top of the 10th and, after an intentional pass to Jim Northrup, Gene Lamont singled home two more runs. Fred Scherman closed out the game for his tenth save. Dean Chance got the win (3-3). Pete Richert (1-4) was tagged with the loss. Tigers 5 Orioles 2. The Tigers have moved past the Orioles to clam first place in the AL East.
